Who's power grabbing now?
That would be our President, George W. Bush. We like to think of him as King Bush, the Decider. Poof! Habeas Corpus gone. Poof! Torture approved.
BTW, what IS Habeas Corpus? "A writ of habeas corpus is a judicial mandate to a prison official ordering that an inmate be brought to the court so it can be determined whether or not that person is imprisoned lawfully and whether or not he should be released from custody." This means if YOU are picked up accidentally you CAN NOT force the prison or court to tell you WHY you are imprisoned.....pretty scary stuff, no?
How to Make a Power Grab 'Mundane'
The Washington Post's story today -- "Bush Signs Terrorism Measure" -- looks like just another routine report on the approval of a piece of legislation, accompanied by the usual "he said/ she said" quotes. A typical reader might shrug at this point and shift to the sports section to read the latest autopsy on the Redskins.
