Tucker Carlson apologizes for sleepy John McCain story

Who's apologizing now?

Tucker Carlson, bad conservative, bad talk show host, bad dancer. Tucker live-blogged the SOTU address and wrote NYT “[T]hat’s exactly what McCain did tonight,” Mr. Carlson wrote, “napping on camera for ten agonizing seconds. Lack of self-control? An expression of contempt? Embarrassing in any case.”

Well, it seems Mr. Carlson was nudged by complaints from Mr. McCain’s camp into apologizing last night for his blog entry, although he stubbornly stopped short of accepting the popular wisdom, held even by his own producers, that the Senator was not sleeping.
My producers agree with McCain, that he was reading, not napping. For myself, I’m still not sure what the tape shows, but I do know McCain pretty well, having covered him extensively in 2000, and I think he’s a pretty honest guy. So I’ll take his word for it, and acknowledge — at the least — that there was no way to know for certain whether he was actually sleeping or not, and I should have said that, and I’m sorry I didn’t.
